Norton-Carlisle Post No. 115

STUART AMERICAN LEGION

The American Legion, department of Nebraska was formed shortly after World War I, with veterans of that war eligible for membership. Since then, veterans of the other war eras - World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, Grenada - Lebanon, Panama, and Persian Gulf War have joined the organization.

Eligibility for membership is determined by "time periods" served by veterans of these wars. An honorable discharge from service is required. The Legion is a non profit organization and, although it is very active in State and U.S. Government policy, it is nonpartisan in politics.

Norton-Carlisle Post 115 of Stuart is typical of any Legion organization. Our children and youth and Americanism programs sponsors the annual Easter Egg Hunt, Boys State, Junior Law Cadet, Oratorical Contests, County Government Day, and the Pat Patterson scholarship. It also donates to the baseball program, National Sandhills Livestock Show, and many other activities. Veterans who are hospitalized or confined to Veterans homes can find help through the local and County Service Office.

The Post 115 Color Guard and Firing Squad leads the annual 4th of July parade and conducts military rites for deceased veterans. Memorial Day services at the cemetery, honoring the deceased veterans and all the dead, are finalized by a volley from the firing squad and "Taps" by the buglers. The Avenue of Flags add to the solemnity of the day. The Color Guard also posts the colors at various school and sports events.

The "Sons of Legionnares" was re-established at Post 115. There are approximately 28 members. They held their election of officers April 27, 2003 and began holding regular meetings.

A full meal with salad bar is served on the second Sunday of every month from 5:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the Legion Lounge. The lounge is also available for private parties, dinners, family gatherings, etc. These and other activities and services make Post 115 an intricate part of the Stuart community.

The opening words to the "Legion Preamble to the Constitution" are "For God and Country…".
